Nosferatu with Tom Roberts at The Grand Halle

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror takes viewers on a chilling journey through the mists of 19th century Transylvania, as the hapless Thomas Hutter finds himself at odds with the mysterious Count Orlok—a grotesque vampire. This unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula has enthralled horror audiences since its release and is routinely included in lists of the best films of world cinema.

World-renowned pianist Tom Roberts will introduce this iconic work, before accompanying the film with a live performance of his own original score, originally commissioned by the Pittsburgh Silent Film Society for the 100th anniversary of Nosferatu.

Nosferatu at the Downtown Theater Project

Featuring live musical score by Tom Roberts!

For the 100th anniversary of F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, the Pittsburgh Silent Film Festival asked Tom to compose an original score for this legendary silent film.

Released in 1922, Nosferatu is renowned for its expressionist style, particularly its striking use of light and shadow. Count Orlok's looming silhouette on the wall remains one of the most iconic images in film history. Tom’s score enhances the film as a whole, heightening its eerie atmosphere and bringing new life to its timeless visuals.

Nosferatu: A Symphony in Horror

Featuring live musical score by Tom Roberts!

An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, NOSFERATU (1922) is the quintessential silent vampire film, crafted by legendary German director F. W. Murnau. Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws — perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned.
